Overcoming the Glare While Driving This Summer

Glare refers to reduced visibility due to the sun or headlights of oncoming vehicles and resultant diminished or altered perception when driving.

Sun glare is most intense when driving eastward in the early morning and westward in the evening. It does not last long, but while it does it can make the road and the traffic on it very hard to monitor.

These times of the day are known as the golden hour in protography, but in traffic they can make viibility extremely poor. The greatest danger is when the dazzle appears suddenly, for example, when the road turns or when the sun reappears from behind trees or is reflected in a building.

Here are some tips to help you overcome glare when driving:

• Adjust your speed to conditions on the road, and remember that the posted speed limit refers to ideal conditions;

• Ensure a safety cushion between your vehicle and that in front of you. The three-second rule can be increased to 4 or 5 seconds, allowing you enough time to react in case the driver in front slams on the brakes because the glare blinds him or her;

• Make sure your windshield is always clean, inside and out, and in good condition generally. Spots and marks, as well as scratches and cracks on the windshield, however small, will refract light and amplify the effect of the glare;

• Keep the dashboard clutter free, and avoid using high gloss finish cleaners;

• Keep a pair of polarized sunglasses in your car, and use the car’s sun visor;

• To make sure the other drivers can see you, turn on your headlights;

• The glare tends to coincide with the rush hour, so keep this in mind and adjust your driving accrordingly. Also, look out for cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and children. Even if you are not directly affected by the glare, be aware that other drivers might be and exercise caution. The dazzle can obscure  traffic signs, making drivers more likely to run a red light;

• If it is very difficult to see the road, use lane markings to guide you;

• If you still don’t feel confident about your perception, pull over when it is safe to do so and take a short break.
